Students needed for free tuition program

A new, free tuition program will be available for qualified students who want to attend Arapahoe Community College this summer. The summer pilot program known as the Summer Bridge program is designed to create a smooth transition to go to college for students who are motivated but may require some remediation before pursuing their goals.

Students who are accepted into the program will be granted free tuition and books for two college courses during the summer semester. The program starts during the last week of May and is 10 weeks long. Students in the program will participate in educational workshops, free tutoring, personal advising, professional mentoring and financial aid assistance.

ACC is looking for 15 motivated students who will graduate this spring with a minimum grade-point average of 1.7. Students must be first-time college students or under the age of 20 and completing their GED with financial need. Students who successfully complete this program will have access to other ACC scholarships, most notably the First Generation Scholarship, which will cover up to 80 percent of tuition per year for the next two years.

Following are the steps to be considered for the program:

1. Apply Online to ACC at www.arapahoe.edu;

2. Complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid at www.fafsa.ed.gov;

3. Submit ACT, SAT or ACCUPLACER scores to Andrew Garcia, pre-enrollment services specialist, or fax them to the Office of Pre-Enrollment Services at 303.797.5773.

4. Complete the Summer Bridge application at the link below:

5. Submit a short essay with a minimum of 150 words answering the question: “Why are you a good candidate for this program?” E-mail the essay to andrew.garcia@arapahoe.edu.

All information must be complete and turned in by May 1, 2009.

“Don't wait until the last minute as space is limited,” Garcia said. For more information contact Andrew Garcia at 303.797.5657 or andrew.garcia@arapahoe.edu, Jason Romero at 303.797.5906 or jason.romero@arapahoe.edu, or Emily Dovi at 303.797.5960 or emily.dovi@arapahoe.edu.
