Second suicide reported at jail this week

The Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office and the coroner’s office are investigating two inmates’ suicides within a recent three-day span.

The most recent suicide was discovered the night of July 21. An inmate being held at the Arapahoe County Sheriff’s Office Detentions Facility was discovered inside his cell, with a portion of his jail jumpsuit wrapped tightly around his neck. Detentions facility staff and medical personnel responded to the incident immediately and provided first aid assistance.

Members of the South Metro Fire District responded, treated the inmate and transported him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The inmate was identified as Russell Keith Brunecz, 48.

Brunecz was being held at the detention facility on a no-bond hold as a first-degree murder suspect. He had been in custody in Arapahoe County since Dec. 29 of last year.

On the afternoon of July 18, an inmate was discovered inside his cell, hanging from a bed sheet. Although detentions staff and detentions medical personnel responded to the incident immediately and provided first aid, the injuries sustained as the result of inmate’s actions were fatal.

The inmate was identified as Mack Pete Warren, 24, of Denver.

Warren was being held on a $100,000 bond, regarding allegations of second-degree burglary and violation of a restraining order.
