In recent high school sports matchups around the south metro area:
Two-time defending boys state tennis champions Regis Jesuit faced Cherry Creek, the state runner-up the past two seasons, in a dual meet held on Aug. 31.
Cherry Creek won, 5-1, with Regis winning only the No. 2 singles match.
Creek won No. 3 singles and all the doubles matches.
The No. 1 singles match was played but not completed because of weather.
Both the Centennial and Continental Leagues had conference golf meets.
Arapahoe dominates: Arapahoe won the Centennial League meet on Sept. 2 at Saddle Creek with a score of 279 which was 23 strokes lower than second place Cherry Creek.
Warriors sophomore Grant Juergeus had five birdies and an eagle on the back nine and won individual honors with a 6-under-par 66 to beat teammates Will Kates and Graham Dzengelewski who were second and third.
Kates, last season’s state champion as a sophomore, carded a 4-under par 68 and senior Dzengelewski had a 2-under-par 70.
Castle View on top: At the Aug. 31 Continental League at Blackstone Country Club, Castle View finished first among the teams with a score of 312 while Rock Canyon was a stroke behind in second place.
Legend’s Ryan Parker had a hole-in-one and shot a 2-under-par 70 to win medalist honors. Castle View’s Luke Cushman turned in a 71 while ThunderRidge’s Dylan Everett had an even-par 72.
In softball action, top-ranked Rock Canyon won its seventh straight game as it prepared for a Continental League showdown against ranked ninth-ranked Legend that was scheduled to be played Sept. 9.
Castle View 8, Bear Creek 6: The Sabercats scored twice in the top of the eighth inning on Sept. 1 to pull out a win as Amber Rychlick went 4-for-4 to pace Castle View’s 12-hit attack.
Legend 3, Pueblo South 0: Sophomore Cameron Ponich tossed a no-hitter and the Titans scored three runs in the top of the eighth inning in a win over Pueblo South, one of the state’s ranked 4A teams, on Aug. 29. Ponich issued five walks and struck out eight batters in the win.
Legend 13, Dakota Ridge 1: The Titans whipped Dakota Ridge on Sept. 3 as Vic Wharton, Emma Athey and Emma Harrington each had three hits.
ThunderRidge 14, Dakota Ridge 2: Natalie Hodges, Payton Pacheco, Courtney McAllister, Alyssa Hunter and Jorja Sierra each had two hits in the Grizzlies’ romp over Dakota Ridge on Sept. 1.
Cherry Creek 5, Grandview 3: The Bruins rallied from a 3-0 deficit to down Grandview on Sept. 2. Junior Amanda Licht belted two home runs and sophomore Hadley Selman also had two hits to pace Creek’s offense.
Douglas County 8, Valor Christian 6: Freshman Jenna Madison and sophomore Sydney Montoya each had two hits and three RBI in the Huskies’ win on Sept. 2. Freshmen Kaylie Whidden and Charlsie Kulbe joined senior Ella Kane with two hits each for the Crusaders.
Heritage 10, Air Academy 9: The Eagles won their third straight game as they held on to edge Air Academy on Aug. 29. Caroline Ermel, Maleia Schaap and Ashlyn Porter each had three hits for Heritage in the game which featured a combined 26 hits for both teams.
The Eagles won their fourth consecutive game when they edged Monarch, 11-9, on Sept. 4 as junior Darby Kramp had four hits and classmate Jadyn Winkler drove in three runs with a homer and triple.
Arapahoe 13, Eaglecrest 11: The Warriors scored six runs in the second inning and defeated Eaglecrest in a Centennial League game on Sept. 5 that featured a combined 27 hits. Katie Maney and Becca Dieffenbach each had three hits for Arapahoe and Maney had three RBI.
