Rocky Mountain Renegades football starts May 15.

After months of preparation, the Castle Rock-based football team, part of the North American Football League, kicks off with a home scrimmage May 15 at Castle View High School, which serves as the Renegades home field, against the Colorado Havoc.

The game starts at 3 p.m. Tickets are $9, and kids 5 and younger get in free.

Players for the Renegades have been pooled from Castle Rock and Parker, with some entries from Aurora, and other surrounding communities. Among the Renegades roster of talent is Jacob Perkins, Willie Smalls and John Byrd.

Perkins, wearing No. 8, resides in Parker and will serve as a wide receiver for Rocky Mountain. Standing 5 feet 11 inches and 195 pounds, Perkins played high school football in Las Vegas, before playing collegiate ball for Colorado School of Mines.

In 2001, Perkins played for the Colorado Football Conference’s South East Silver Backs. After, he served as a wide receivers coach for Mines one season and a defensive backs coach two seasons later.

Smalls, jersey No. 34, hails from Colorado Springs and is a running back for the Renegades. Standing 5-foot-10, 225 pounds, he was an All-Conference football player as a running back and a linebacker at Battle Creek High School. He also was a running back for Benedict College in Columbia, S.C.

In 2004, he played for the Raleigh Rebels as part of the National Indoor Football League.

Byrd, whose family is also one of the owners of the organization, has a seemingly endless list of professional football credits. Standing 5-foot-10, 200 pounds, as a defensive back and free safety, Byrd was an MVP in the Team USA Gladiators versus New Zealand Haka in 2002. Among his other many credits, Byrd played with the All-Star Rocky Mountain Reapers in the North American Football League in 2003.

From 1999 to 2007, Byrd played in the National Indoor Football League with the Sioux City Bandits, the Evansville Blue Cats, the Tri-City Diesel and the Oklahoma Crude. He played for the Rapid City Red Dogs in the United Indoor Football League in 2005, and he was on the field for the Danville Demolition in 2007, a part of the American Indoor Football League.
