The 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office’s fourth Annual DA Citizen’s Academy was a mega success this year with a record class participation of 50 students from various Colorado communities; with some participants traveling from as far as rural Elbert County to attend the eight – week long course.

The course provided students with an in-depth understanding of the legal system and the various functions of the 18th Judicial District Attorney’s Office.  Participants learned about many of the specialized programs in the judicial system and criminal proceedings from the time of arrest to post conviction actions.

The course covered: Introduction to the Criminal Justice System, Victims Rights and Services, Investigations and Polygraphs, the Process of Felony and Misdemeanor case filings, the Juvenile Justice Process, the Anatomy of a Trial and Consumer Protection.  Facilitators of the course’s topics were comprised of Assistant District Attorney, Leslie Hansen, Chief Deputy District Attorney’s, Investigators and Support staff of the District Attorney’s Office, 18th Judicial District.

The Academy ended with closing remarks from District Attorney, Carol Chambers and a graduation ceremony where all participants received a certificate of completion.

One participant wrote in their course evaluation, “Thank you for offering this DA’s Citizen’s Academy.  I have shared some of the things I have learned with neighbors.  I also attended the Greenwood Village Police Academy and the Englewood Police Academy in past years.  This is a perfect follow – up to find out what happens after officers’ make arrests.”
