Blaster the Burro got plenty of exercise Sept. 24, as the Mines football team racked up six touchdowns and a field goal against the visiting CSU-Pueblo Thunderwolves.
Coming off a monster 84-10 win at Adams State, Mines crushed CSU-Pueblo 45-17. The Orediggers are now 2-2 overall, and 2-0 in conference play.
Senior quarterback John Matocha and senior running back Michael Zeman continue to serve as the backbone of the Mines offense. Matocha had 318 passing yards for the Orediggers, and Zeman ran for 92 yards and two touchdowns.
Senior wide receivers Josh Johnston and Mason Karp also had strong showings with 70 yards and 65 yards, respectively. Each had seven receptions, including Karp's second-quarter touchdown.
For the defense, senior cornerback Mason Pierce led the team with four solo tackles and an interception.
Pierce and fellow defenders Evan Alexander and Jaden Williams had five tackles each against the Thunderwolves. Zach Hester and Josh Pollard also recorded sacks for the game, knocking CSU-Pueblo offense back eight yards and seven yards, respectively.
Mines next plays Oct. 1 at Chadron State. The Orediggers then return to Golden for the Oct. 8 homecoming game against Colorado Mesa.
