The top two vote-getters in the primary election for the Republican candidate for Douglas County sheriff both say they are waiting for more results before making any calls on a winner.
As of 9 a.m. Wednesday, Darren Weekly, the head of investigations for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office, led the race by about 800 votes.
Merlin Klotz, the county’s clerk and recorder, said over the next nine days, about 2,000 more ballots will be processed and counted.
“The odds of things changing is pretty small,” Klotz said.
Klotz added that because the remaining ballots are randomized, it’s likely they will have votes similar to those already counted.
Weekly said he was “cautiously optimistic” with his lead but planned to wait for more votes to come in.
“I have enough respect for the process and enough respect for my opponents just to let the process play out,” he said Wednesday morning.
The margin for an automatic recount is half a percent. As of Wednesday morning, the tally margin was about 1.4%. Any candidate can also request a recount within 28 days after the election, regardless of the margin. The requesting candidate pays for the recount.
Anderson said Wednesday that he was also waiting for more votes to come in before calling the race.
Holly Kluth, the former undersheriff for the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office was in third place with 18% of the vote.
“The people spoke and they are voting,” she said. “I have been really just blessed to have gotten to know so many new people and gotten to know the heartbeat of Douglas County and what they're concerned about. I don't plan on going anywhere, I hope I can use all that I learned to somehow serve the citizens of this county.”
Lora Thomas, who has served on the board of county commissioners since January 2017, was the final candidate to enter the race in December. She received the lowest vote count at 8,039 votes.
“All I have to say is anybody who knows me knows I’m a woman of my word,” she said. "And I'm just truly disappointed.”
