Let’s be sure to thank our local heroes
Like many winter afternoons here, bright sunlight warmed Dec. 4.
Only a soft breeze stirred the 40ish lake water at the Chatfield
State Park swim beach. Then, as their supporters cheered, team
after team of heroes dove bravely into that chilling water.
Who would do such a thing? Employees of local firms and local
fire/rescue crews and local law-enforcement officers, all dressed
in comic costumes as they cheerfully plunged into the icy bath to
benefit Colorado Special Olympics.
I'll bet you thought that our county sheriff deputies and
municipal police officers just enforce the law. Nope. They nobly
take on hundreds of public-service and educational endeavors toys
and bikes for kids, safety and identify-protection classes,
victims' advocacy and counseling, safeguarding seniors, college
scholarships, citizens emergency response trainings and Scouts to
name only a few. And hazardous duty like Saturday's "polar
plunge."
When you next see these local heroes, please thank them.
