Special to CCN
Residents of Arapahoe and Douglas counties may find themselves
in different congressional districts and represented by a different
U.S. congressman or congresswoman this summer. That’s because
Congressional District 6, currently represented by Mike Coffman,
has to lose nearly 80,000 residents in this year’s legislative
redistricting process.
Every 10 years, following the new census figures, the seven U.S.
Congressional Districts in Colorado are reviewed to determine the
population growth in each district. If the population has grown,
new boundaries are redrawn to ensure each district is equal by no
more than a 5 percent deviation in population. Thus, some Districts
with large population growth will lose voters to other
congressional districts, while others with limited or little
population growth will gain new ones.
How this process will work, who’s involved, what it will mean to
voters, and a summary of the work done so far will be the topic of
the April unit meetings, hosted by the League of Women Voters of
Arapahoe County.
Meetings will be April 11 at 5:30 p.m. at Garcia’s Mexican
Restaurant, 5050 S. Syracuse, and April 14 at 9:30 a.m. at
Castlewood Library, corner of S. Uinta and Arapahoe Rd.
For more information call Marlu Burkamp at (303) 798- 2939.
District 6 includes a majority of the population of Arapahoe and
Douglas Counties. The rest is Elbert County, parts of Jefferson
County, and a small portion of Park County.
