Margaritas abound, pastel-colored surfboards line the walls and lively music plays; Lady Nomada’s first week of operation in Olde Town is in full swing. The restaurant, which serves food inspired by Baja California cuisine and is located at 7519 Grandview Avenue — the former site of Kline’s Beer Hall and The D Note before that - held its grand opening on July 24.

Lady Nomada is the latest endeavor from the Gastamo Group, which also owns Homegrown Tap and Dough, Park Burger, Birdcall and Perdida. Co-owner Philippe Failyau said he envisions Nomada to be a more laid-back version of Perdida.

“This location is a little more casual, a little bit more fun and livelier than (Perdida),” said Failyau. “Still the same vibe of transporting our guests to leave all their worries at the door and escape the trouble that might be at home. Especially after COVID, people want to go out, have a little extra fun, and hopefully we can transport them to Baja (California).”

The restaurant features a full bar and serves contemporary Mexican cuisine inspired by the Baja California region, including fish tacos, potato flautas, and ceviche - the latter of which has been drawing positive reviews from patrons in Nomada’s early goings.

“The ceviche was amazing,” said Arvada resident Cassie Tanner, who tried Lady Nomada during their first week of operation, “and their short rib is incredible. They served it with consume sauce that was to die for - so flavorful and delicious.”

Christie Winn, who lives near Olde Town and frequents the district, also tried the ceviche and had positive things to say.

“The ceviche was delicious,” said Winn. “I really liked it a lot. My friend and I went on opening day. I’m impressed. I have a friend coming in from out of town and I’m totally taking her here. I think it’s a good addition to (Olde Town) Arvada and I’m there enough to say that. My friends and I like to say, `be safe, have fun, support local businesses.’”

Failyau said that Nomada’s menu is inspired by a trip his business partner, Peter Newlin, took to the Baja Penensula.

“(Nomada’s cuisine) is inspired by the trip that my partner took a few years back,” said Failyau. “He drove from Tijuana to Cabo and just really loved the laid-back vibe. It’s very similar to San Diego but with a little more of a Mexican flair. So, it’s just kind of fun, kind of that 70’s surf culture as well.”

Failyau added that he and Newlin chose the location in Olde Town due to their familiarity with the district through Homegrown. Though the Arvada Planning Commission gave revisions, such as replacing a large garage-style front door, to the first Lady Nomada proposal, Failyau said that the City team has been easy to work with.

“We love Olde Town, we love the community,” said Failyau, “and felt that this would be a good addition to Olde Town. The City of Arvada’s been awesome to work with. Obviously, with the redesign process (the Planning Commission_ want to make sure that we conform with the rest of the streets and we keep the design and the great feel of Olde Town.”

While many first-week patrons were impressed with the fare, Arvada native Kyle Gayton was not wowed by Nomada’s food.

“The food was just kind of OK,” said Gayton. “The shrimp tacos weren’t bad, but only two of them, for what they charge - damn. The carne asada fries weren’t bad but were kind of lukewarm. For the food they have and the prices they charge, I don’t see it lasting if I’m perfectly honest. If they’re still open by January, I’ll be pleasantly surprised.”

Nevertheless, Gayton was complimentary of the atmosphere and said he would give the restaurant another shot.

“As far as atmosphere goes, it was pretty dope,” said Gayton. “I want to go back and give it it’s day in court. I’ve been super curious to try the ceviche.”

Lady Nomada also hosts live music, which began July 30.
