In the race for state Senate District 26, a state representative defeated a county commissioner.

Democrat Daniel Kagan, of Cherry Hills Village, won with 53.2 percent of the vote in his race against Nancy Doty, a Littleton resident who received 46.8 percent of the vote as she sought the Senate seat instead of running for re-election as Arapahoe County commissioner for District 1.

"I've had tremendous support," Kagan, who is leaving his post representing House District 3, said on Election Night.

"I attribute my success to my campaign staff and volunteers," he said. "And to the common sense of the voters of Arapahoe County."

Doty, who served as the county clerk and recorder before joining the board of commissioners, could not be reached for comment on Election Night.

The state Senate seat is currently held by term-limited Democrat Linda Newell, of Littleton. The district encompasses Littleton, Englewood, Sheridan, Greenwood Village, Cherry Hills Village and parts of Centennial and Aurora.

Kagan said his main goal in the Senate is to responsibly guide impending budget cuts.

"I want to make sure that the pain of that doesn't fall on the poorly represented," he said.

Kagan was appointed to the state House in 2009 to replace retiring state Rep. Anne McGihon and was elected in 2010 and re-elected in 2012 and 2014.

Born in England, Kagan holds a law degree from Yale Law School.

Doty was the Arapahoe County clerk and recorder from 2004 to 2013, when she assumed office as county commissioner.
