With the first two rounds of action added to history, area teams in the state championship playoffs for girls soccer continue to fight through the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds, hoping to make it to the big show May 26 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

Arapahoe (5A)

Arapahoe posted wins over Brighton and cross-town rival Heritage in the first two rounds of the Class 5A tournament. The No. 5-seeded Warriors continued their hunt to return to the championship finals with a quarterfinals win over No. 4 Air Academy 2-1 in double overtime.

Against the Kadets, Arapahoe Laura Feehs scored one goal and assisted another. Shannon Koundourakis also put one in the back of the net. Raleigh Mercer also had an assist. Goalkeeper Molly McGough had five saves.

With the win, the Warriors advanced to the semifinals and faced No. 8 seed Rocky Mountain May 22 at Englewood High School in Englewood. Arapahoe defeated the Lobos 3-0 and returned to the 5A finals once again May 26 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City.

Against Rocky Mountain, Alex Anthony, Ali Stone and Feehs each scored a goal. Koundourakis assisted on two of them. McGough had one save for the shut out. Results from the championship game were not available by press time.

Cherry Creek (5A)

After putting up wins in the first two rounds of 5A state action against Hinkley and Douglas County, Cherry Creek, the tournament’s No. 1 seed, met with an upset to No. 8 Rocky Mountain in the quarterfinals. The Lobos eliminated the Bruins after a 4-2 shootout, following a 3-3 tie.

Becka Talcott scored two goals for Creek. Molly Pomeroy also scored one. The Bruins finished their season with a 15-2-1 overall record and the Centennial League championship.

Valor Christian (4A)

Last year’s Class 4A state runner-up, Valor went on the hunt for a return to the finals after a win over Denver North and Castle View in the first two rounds of this year’s state playoffs. The No. 2 seed, the Eagles faced No. 7 Golden in the quarterfinals May 19 at Valor Christian High School in Highlands Ranch and beat the Demons 3-0.

Madison Meyers scored both goals for the Eagles. Abby Elliott scored one as well. Janine Beckie, Stephanie Subervi and Layla Brown each had an assist.

With the win, the Eagles advanced to the semifinals to face No. 3 seed Cheyenne Mountain May 22 at Englewood High School. Valor defeated the Indians with a 2-0 final and returned to the 4A finals May 26 at Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City. Results from the finals were unavailable by press time. No highlights from the Cheyenne Mountain game were available either.
