Julie Vincelette, of the SoSu Artist Collective gallery at the Streets at SouthGlenn, has a flag in the Flags of Hope collection displayed on Santa Fe Drive in Denver’s Art District. Vincelette’s colorful flag included poet Barry Lopez’s line: “Make your life a worthy expression of leaning into the light.” These flags will be displayed in February at other spots as well: Lighthouse Writers Workshop, Boulder Museum of Contemporary Art and more. Included in the effort: The People’s Projector on the Daniels and Fisher Tower in downtown Denver at 5 p.m. nightly. Look for these happy notes. (Vincelette is an art teacher at Littleton’s Sandburg Elementary School.) Museo de las Americas helped distribute initial flag-making kits.
Colorado Abstracted
New at the Littleton Museum: “Colorado Abstracted: Five Artists Capture the Transcendental Experiences of Nature.” Artists included: Patricia Finley, Annamarie Mead, Lydia Riegle, Janet Rundquist and Cynthia Winter. The group celebrates the Colorado lifestyle: “a lyrical mix of sight, sound, air and spirit, as female artists use different materials and techniques to paint. They refer to poet Mary Oliver: “Instructions for living a life: Pay attention. Be astonished. Tell about it.” Museum hours: Tuesday to Saturday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Call for reservation to visit: 303-795-3950. Masks required and a reserved visit time.
Tony Ortega
More happy notes for the art lover: Denver artist Tony Ortega’s paintings are in an exhibit called “Raices y ramas’’ (Roots and Branches), which is at Denver Botanic Gardens’ new $40 million Freyer-Newman Center on the Gardens’ York Street campus. Included are prints, paintings and pastels depicting Latino life in today’s city.
Aurora Fox
The Aurora Fox Arts Center, 9900 E. Colfax Ave., Aurora, announced the rest of its 36th season: hopefully with a masked, but in-person audience, but virtual if necessary: “The Pavilion” Feb. 26 to March 21; “Queen’s Girl in the World,” April 16 to May 9; and “Wonderland: Alice’s Rock and Roll Adventure,” June 11 to July 3. Also happening: “The Voices Project:” a limited serial video podcast, hosted by Geree Hinshaw and Helen R. Murray, featuring artists and theatre makers from diverse backgrounds; Cultural Concerts on Colfax — a monthly series of music and storytelling that celebrates Colorado’s diversity — through June — check at: aurorafoxartscenter.org.
Town Hall Arts Center
We enjoyed Town Hall’s virtual performance of “A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder” last weekend in Littleton and will look forward to the next show: “Almost Maine.” A plastic bubble that separates actors from audience may allow for limited in-person (masked, of course) seating later in the season, but in the meantime, theatre companies are learning new ways to present their work — stay tuned! Performances will also be screened for audiences who aren’t yet comfortable with live events. Contact townhallartscenter.org or call 303-794-2787. Good news — auditions for adult actors have been collected for performances of “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown,” to be directed by Nick Sugar, to be produced in mid-March. Streaming performances will be produced. A schedule of planned in-person performances was included with the audition notice — we will hope to stay in tune ...
