Eighty-eight people with ties to Chaparral High School in Parker have been quarantined until next week due to their possible exposure to a possible COVID-19 case, school officials said.
The school sent a letter Monday to families of children who came in close contact with a person exhibiting symptoms of the virus. The letter, sent on behalf of the Douglas County Health, Wellness and Prevention Team, states both students and staff were quarantined.
A Douglas County School District spokesperson confirmed that 88 people are being quarantined from the school. The quarantined individuals can return as early as Sept. 14, according to the letter, but the Tri-County Health Department -- whose jurisdiction includes Douglas County -- will determine when they are able to return.
The person exhibiting symptoms is in isolation, the letter states. The letter encouraged parents to ensure that their child remains quarantined.
“During this time, your child should stay home and not go to other schools, activities, childcare providers or activities around other people,” the letter to affected families states.
The quarantined students will continue learning online until they can return, officials said. Other children in the family can still go to school, unless their quarantined sibling shows symptoms or tests positive for the virus, the letter states.
If families who received the letter have more than one child at Chaparral, they are asked to contact the school to learn which child needs to be quarantined.
The most common symptoms of COVID-19 include fever, cough and/or shortness of breath. Other symptoms can include sore throat, congestion/runny nose, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, headache/body aches and new loss of taste or smell. If you have a medical concern, contact your medical provider of guidance.
The district’s operations team disinfected the school before classes began Tuesday.
