Finally.
After four years of climbing up the final results of the Class
5A boys high school cross country state championship meet, Cherry
Creek’s Walter Schafer finally took home gold.
Schafer, who was the 5A boys runner-up last year when the Bruins
won the state’s team title, won the individual bragging rights Nov.
7 at Fossil Ridge High School in Fort Collins with a time of 15
minutes, 50.04 seconds.
As a team, the Bruins boys took ninth this time around with
senior Doug Brady placing eighth overall with 16:15.49. No one else
on the team was able to place higher than 83rd.
Also running for Cherry Creek boys at state this season was
senior Pete Wanberg, sophomore Grant Caswell, sophomore Matt
Westfall, senior Taylor Hickey and sophomore Alex Brudzinski.
As for the Cherry Creek girls, the Bruins finished in 13th place
with sophomore Olivia Anderson leading them in 16th place overall
and a time of 19:16.97. Senior Claire Gallagher landed at 58, and
junior Kara Odum came in at 72.
Also running for the girls team at state this year was freshman
Kindsey Kuster, sophomore Miranda Nelson, freshman Caitlin Vera and
senior Megan Williams.
