County waives interest on certain tax payments

Businesses, individuals now have option of paying property taxes in two installments


Arapahoe County businesses and residents who intended to pay their property taxes in full on April 30 now have the option of paying in two equal installments, with the first half due by April 20 and the second due by June 15.

According to a letter from Arapahoe County Treasurer Sue Sandstrom, the option to pay in two installments is intended to provide relief by spreading out payments and lengthening the time allowed to pay without interest.

Payments must be made by check or cash, and they may be mailed or deposited in the secure drop box at the Arapahoe County Administrative Building, 5334 S. Prince St. in Littleton. Online and over-the-phone payments do not qualify for the interest waiver, the treasurer said in the letter.

All property tax payment due dates and interest rates are determined by Colorado state statutes, and the treasurer's office must follow those statutes. However, due to the financial difficulties associated with the COVID-19 health crisis, the governor issued an executive order March 20, providing flexibility in collecting interest on tax payments.

As of March 27, no adjustments to tax payment due dates or additional late interest waivers have been made. Full payments made after April 30 and second-half payments made after June 15 will accrue statutory interest.

This information does not apply to mass payments, title company payments and delinquent payments for prior years.
