County public works recognized

The Arapahoe County Public Works and Development and Facilities and Fleet departments have received three first-place awards from the Colorado Chapter of the American Public Works Association.

The county received first place in the Streets & Traffic – Engineering/Operations/Maintenance, Large Community category for its Traffic Signal Health Index Program, which identifies and prioritizes traffic signal-repair issues.

“The traffic-signal program allows the county to better identify and fix maintenance issues before they affect the public and flow of traffic,” said Rod Bockenfeld, chair of the Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners.

Public Works and Development also placed first in the Environmental Design/Maintenance/Operations, Large Community category for its Peoria Facility Runoff Control Plan.

The plan was developed in partnership with the Southeast Metro Stormwater Authority. In an effort to reduce sediment runoff, off-site erosion and meet stormwater quality requirements, the county built a concrete washout system that removes sediment from treated water.

Facilities and Fleet Management won first place in the Engineering/Construction Management, Large Community category for the improvements at the new district attorney’s office. The project focused on energy efficiency, safety and security.
