Breweries collaborate on new Golden-themed beer for charity

COVID-19 put a stop (for the time being anyway) to Collaboration Fest, the Denver area’s annual event that brings brewers from around the state together to create new beers. But it couldn’t squelch the spirit of collaboration that is at the heart of that event.

Instead, with the event put on indefinite hold, several Golden breweries decided to work together to create a new beer that would pay tribute to the city they call home while helping organizations that serve it.

The result is the Golden Strong Ale, a new Belgian Ale that is now for sale in specialty 16 oz. cans in several Golden brewery taprooms.

70% of the proceeds from the sale of the beer will go toward the Colorado Brewer’s Guild, the state’s nonprofit brewery trade association which says its mission is “to promote, protect, and propel independent craft breweries in [Colorado] through advocacy, community, education, and public awareness.”

Collaboration Fest is held each year as a fundraiser for Colorado Brewer’s Guild, meaning the organization has missed out on those funds so far this year.

“The Brewers Guild does so much to support Colorado breweries,” said Over Yonder Co-founder Ashleigh Bilodeaux. “They lost out on two major fundraising events due to COVID-19, and it was an obvious choice to give back to them with this collaboration.”

20% of the proceeds will go toward charities chosen by the breweries, including the Golden Backpack Program and the Marsha P. Johnson Institute, which is dedicated to protecting the rights of Black Transgender people. The remaining 10% are going back to the breweries.

Prior to the stay-at-home order taking effect in March, several brewers from the participating breweries collaborated on recipe development and then met for a brew day at Over Yonder Brewing Company.

For example, New Terrain Brewing Company contributed canning materials while AC Golden Brewing Company donated grain from Root Shoot Malting and locally-grown hops.

Several other Golden businesses also contributed to the brewing effort. Those included Propagate Lab, which supplied the yeast, and CODI manufacturing, which donated mobile-canning equipment that was used to fill cans with the beer.

The Golden Strong Ale, which has an ABV of 9.7%, is described its brewers as having a bold flavor with peppery notes of spices, pear, and banana. The liberal use of hops gives the beer a fruity champagne-like flavor balanced by a malty backbone and a dry finish.

“Golden has a surprisingly large and active brewery community,” said Alan Windhausen, the head brewer for Holidaily Brewing. “We’ve come together for pints and collaborations in the past, but this has been especially wonderful to see this Collaboration Fest brew turn into a city-wide project to support our beer family.”

Cans of Golden Strong Ale are being sold in all of the participating breweries’ taprooms, except Holidaily Brewing Company AC Golden Brewing Company.
