Area teams roll in boys lacrosse playoffs

Valor Christian, Cherry Creek and Highlands Ranch advanced to the semifinals of the CHSAA boys lacrosse tournament.

Semifinal games were scheduled for May 15 at Legacy Stadium with the winners advancing to the May 20 state championship game at All City Stadium.

Cherry Creek has won six state lacrosse titles, one more than Kent Denver, which was the other semifinal team. Valor Christian is a two-time state champion.

Top-seeded Valor edged defending champion and ninth seeded Regis Jesuit, 11-9, on May 11 in one of the four quarterfinal games held at Legacy Stadium. Unbeaten Valor (17-0) snapped a 7-7 tie with four goals in the fourth quarter to defeat the Raiders, who were led by three goals from senior Jake Taylor.

Third-seeded Cherry Creek got past No. 6 seed and Centennial rival Grandview, 12-6, and 10th-seeded Highlands Ranch edged No. 2 Arapahoe, 8-7.

Kent Denver, the fifth seed, made the semifinals with a 12-9 win over No. 4 Rock Canyon.

In first-round 5A games May 7-9, Valor Christian snapped a 5-5 tie with six fourth-period goals to down 10th-seeded Fairview, 11-5.

Cherry Creek scored four goals in the fourth quarter to secure a 13-8 win over 14th seeded Colorado Academy. Henry Olson and Aidan Burke each had three goals in the Bruins’ win.

Josh Carlson scored seven goals in Arapahoe’s 15-10 win over No. 15 Chaparral. Justin Hansen, Jackson Naylor and William Edell each had two goals and Edell had four points in Rock Canyon’s 7-6 triumph over No. 13 Rocky Mountain.

Highlands Ranch used a strong second half to upset No. 7 Monarch, 10-5, as Logan Smith led the way with three goals. Regis Jesuit pounded Grand Junction, 22-2, in a first round encounter.

In a 4A opening round, third-seeded Thompson Valley rolled to a 22-1 victory over No. 14 Ponderosa.

The average margin of victory in eight first-round 4A games was 11.6 goals.
