Party politics will fill the air March 17 at Littleton’s Powell Middle School, when the Arapahoe County Republicans hold their county assembly to select candidates for a number of elected offices.
Powell is located at 8000 S. Corona Way. Registration for the assembly delegates who were elected at the party caucuses in February begins at 8 a.m. and the meeting begins at 9. Organizers said the goal is to conclude the assembly by about 12:30 p.m.
At the county assembly, one of the tasks assigned to the delegates will be to determine the Republican candidates who will seek to win the election and represent county commissioner districts 1, 3, and 5.
Susan Beckman, a Republican, currently represents District 1 but can’t seek re-election because of term limits. So far, two Republicans, former Littleton Mayor Doug Clark and Arapahoe County Clerk and Recorder Nancy Doty, have tossed their hats in the ring.
Current District 3 Commissioner Ron Bockenfeld, a Republican, has declared he will seek another term and is unopposed in the Republican Party.
The District 5 commissioner is Democrat Bill Holen, who was appointed in January to fill the remainder of Commissioner Frank Weddig’s term. At that time, Holen declared himself a candidate for a full term. Currently, no Republican has declared as a candidate to oppose Holen.
The assembly delegates will also choose Republican candidates for a number of state representatives who have districts entirely in Arapahoe County, and the same for state senators representing Arapahoe County who have terms expiring at the end of this year. The list should be available prior to the assembly.
Separate meetings will be held to determine party candidates for state representative and senator districts that extend into other counties.
In the meeting, delegates will vote separately for candidates for each office.
Candidates receiving at least 30 percent of the votes cast will appear on the ballot for the June 26 primary election. An office seeker also can get on the primary ballot by circulating petitions and collecting at least the required number of signatures of registered voters.
