Arapahoe commissioners appoint new county attorney

The Arapahoe County Board of Commissioners on Feb. 28 removed the “acting” tag from new County Attorney Ron Carl’s job title.

Carl, a longtime assistant county attorney, took over as acting city attorney when his predecessor, Kathryn Schroeder, retired in December.

“Ron is dedicated, very knowledgeable and a tremendous asset to Arapahoe County,” Board Chair Nancy Sharpe said. “His background in county government makes him the perfect candidate for this position. Arapahoe County will be served by his presence and we are excited to work with him in his new capacity as county attorney.”

Carl earned his law degree from the University of San Diego and his bachelor’s degree in political science from the University of California, San Diego. He joined Arapahoe County 15 years ago, and prior to that served as a senior assistant county attorney in Adams County. He will be responsible for overseeing the 42-member county attorney’s office, which includes attorneys and paralegal and administrative staff.

The county attorney’s office provides legal counsel to county commissioners, staff and other elected officials regarding land use, employment, civil litigation issues, county management and other legal issues.

The county attorney’s office is separate from the district attorney’s office, which prosecutes criminal cases. The county attorney’s office also handles liquor licensing.
