Why are you seeking this office?

I am running because I want to give back to the district that has given so much to my family and children. Our neighborhood schools are the building blocks of our communities, the reason our property values remain so high and the places where our children want to return.

What makes you the best person for the job?

I am qualified because of my experience, education, and work history. I have volunteered with Cherry Creek School District for 20 years and served as Gov. Roy Romer's education policy adviser. I coordinated CCSD's 3A/3B election effort for Belleview, have served on the Cherry Creek Community Legislative Network and hold a master's degree from the University of Denver.

What, if anything, should be done to enhance security at district schools?

I believe a safe school environment for students and staff begins with the mental health of our community. School safety issues are complicated, but providing resources such as deadbolts in classrooms are good places to begin. Arming teachers and staff is not the answer and would fundamentally alter education in our district and country.

What, if anything, should be done to better address the mental health needs of district students?

I will continue furthering the system of mental health support in our schools, emphasizing the social media discussions that are integral to these conversations, and build on the work currently underway in our schools and in the district including, but not limited to: Safe 2Tell, Sources of Strength and advisory periods. Cherry Creek has a registered nurse in every school in the district and increased mental health funding across the board. Please see this video, “Together We Make the Difference,” on the district's YouTube channel, a powerful message from our students. I have been sharing this video.

What issue or issues must the school board make a bigger priority next year than it has in recent years?

The district is doing a great job. I will continue conversations about mental health, diversity and inclusive excellence, and creativity and innovation in education.
