A seven-story, 130-unit senior housing complex will soon find a home just south of Swedish Medical Center in Englewood.
Less than a block south of what locals call Old Hampden — where U.S. Highway 285 curves south of East Hampden Avenue — the new complex, called Atria Englewood, will offer a mix of assisted living and memory-care apartments when it opens in summer 2019.
Demolition is underway at the site, located at 3555 S. Clarkson St. The area has a need for more senior housing, said Ben Burke, president of the Chicago-based company behind the project, in a news release.
“The surrounding south Denver neighborhoods of Washington Park, Platt Park and Harvard Gulch (area) began to flourish in the years following World War II, and many residents have remained in the area over the years,” said Burke, president of CA Senior Living. “As home values continue to rise in these sought-after neighborhoods, seniors are selling their homes” and gravitating toward supportive housing.
The development at 3555 S. Clarkson St. will offer 24 apartments connected with what Atria Senior Living calls its Life Guidance memory care program. Residents will receive care that draws on each of their personal histories, a news release about the complex said.
The care program features “memory boxes” with personal pictures and mementos outside rooms to help residents find their way back to their apartment, said Mike Mejia, a senior vice president with the Atria company, which will operate the overall housing community. Staff members in the Life Guidance program receive extensive training in dementia-related care, he added.
We “believe a person with dementia can continue to lead an engaging and meaningful life,” Mejia said. The program includes physical activity, social engagement, and discussion with the resident and their family to make sure each resident’s circumstances are considered in their care.
The other 106 units will be assisted-living apartments ranging in size from 380 to 1,200 square feet, with studio, one- and one-bedroom-and-den layouts when the complex is complete. Those will feature in-unit washers and dryers, and full kitchens.
Atria Englewood will also feature a rooftop terrace with fire pits and a “sky lounge” with mountain views, separate dining and activity spaces for assisted-living and memory-care residents, and common spaces with monthly events centered around learning, fitness and other interests based on resident preferences.
Also included: “cutting-edge” technology such as wearable devices that monitor residents’ participation in activities, as well as their safety and well-being — and virtual-reality technology to cultivate social engagement and learning.
The project bills itself as addressing demand for “upscale housing and social connectivity” for seniors, a news release said.
“The explosive growth of many cities in the western U.S. has led to an increased need for senior housing. The Englewood area is underserved due to barriers to entry such as scarcity of land,” Burke said.
Atria Senior Living operates housing for independent living, assisted living and memory-care communities in about 200 locations in 28 states and seven Canadian provinces, the news release said. Two locations sit in the Denver area, and a third in Longmont, the release said.
