The field of 69 applicants for superintendent of Jefferson County Schools has been winnowed down to 11 top candidates.
Those candidates, coming from Arizona, Colorado, Florida, Illinois, Maryland, Michigan, Oregon, Pennsylvania and Tennessee, were presented to the Jeffco Board of Education by the hiring firm Ray & Associates Inc on April 20, so the five-person body could select which candidates they wished to interview further.
Ray & Associates was hired earlier this year by the Board to conduct the district's superintendent search. The company reported contacted 825 individuals in 46 states regarding the vacancy in Jeffco. Of those states, Illinois had the most candidates with 60. Texas had the second most with 54 and California third with 50. There were 42 individuals contacted in Colorado.
Out of the 825 contacts, 69 candidates completed the application process. From those 69 candidates, the firm narrowed it down to 11 candidates to present to the board as "top candidates."
The list of 11 candidates was not made available to the public.
“We've done some hard work on this, yours is about to begin,” Bill Newman, of Ray and Associates told the Board April 20 before they adjourned to executive session to review the applicants. “Tonights goal is to get this down to you you would like to bring in to meet in person.”
The district has previously declined requests to reveal the names of the superintendent finalists.
Before the board left for executive session, board member Brad Rupert made a reminder to the public about the district's use of confidentiality for the process.
“I'd like to remind the public that to some extent we don't make the rules on this process,” Rupert said. “Many of the candidates we will be talking to already have excellent jobs and they don't want to alienate themselves from that job. So there is some need for confidentiality.”
The first round of candidate interviews is scheduled for next week.
