As practicing ER physicians, we were used to spending most of our day in the emergency department taking care of non-emergent conditions. The cost to patients and insurance payers for this care was astounding! Can you imagine paying $7,000 for a strep test?
Or $3,000 for a few stitches? Neither can we but this happens on a regular basis. Why is this?
We asked this question for many years. The answer resoundingly centers around availability and convenience.
People will risk paying $7,000 for treatment of strep throat in the ER because it is easy – the ER is always open and insurance pays the majority of the bill. Or at least it used to! Consumers are now being faced with higher ER copays, much larger deductibles and are even seeing their insurance companies refuse to pay emergency department bills for non-emergent visits. Did you know that medical bills are the #1 cause of personal bankruptcy in the US? Overwhelming medical costs affect over two million Americans every year.
Navigating the healthcare waters can certainly be complicated and intimidating. So, where should you
start? We recommend and believe that EVERYONE should have a primary care provider. In fact we believe it so
much that we merged our urgent care centers with a network of primary care providers in the metro area. This rapidly growing group of practices each operates
independently but under the OnPoint Medical Group umbrella.
The relationship allows us quicker access to primary care for our urgent care patients. Why is this so important?
It has been shown that adults with a primary care provider have 19% lower odds of premature death than those that only see specialists.
The use of primary care also helps to reduce the overall cost of healthcare through less ER visits and
by catching and treating disease early.
If everyone would see a primary care provider first, it would save an estimated $67 billion in healthcare expense yearly and significantly reduce ER overcrowding and wait times.
