A dead woman was found in a residence in the 16500 block of East Hialeah Drive in Centennial after investigators searched the home following a shooting that sent another woman to a hospital.
Officers received a call about a shooting at about 2 p.m. Nov. 9, in the area of the house, according to the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Office. The home sits southwest of the intersection of East Smoky Hill Road and South Buckley Road, inside Centennial city limts near the border with Aurora.
The woman who was shot was transported to an area hospital, and investigators found the dead woman in the residence at about 6 p.m., the sheriff's office said. As of about 9 a.m. Nov. 10, the sheriff's office did not have an update on the injured woman's condition.
Investigators believe the shooting arose from a family dispute, and they suspect that the woman was shot by the person whose body was found in the home. Deputies were not searching for a suspect in the death of that woman, but the sheriff's office will further investigate, said Julie Brooks, spokeswoman for the office. There were no other injuries, and more information about the dispute was not available from the office.
Nearby Indian Ridge Elementary School was on "secure perimeter" security status as of about 2:30 p.m. Nov. 9, and students were held beyond the usual 2:45 p.m. dismissal time, according to the sheriff's office. Smoky Hill High School and Laredo Middle School were also on heightened security that afternoon, Brooks said.
A reverse-911 call warning residents to stay in place was sent to 140 residences in about a four-block radius of the home at about 3 p.m. Nov. 9, Brooks said. Investigators stayed at the location until around 11:30 p.m.
Roads in the area of East Progress Drive and East Hialeah Drive were opened back up as of about 6:30 p.m. Nov. 9 except for around the residence.
The sheriff's office has not released the name of the injured woman. The Arapahoe County Coroner's Office is conducting an autopsy and confirmation of identity for the dead woman.
The sheriff's office thanked the Aurora Police Department and the Cunningham Fire Protection District for assistance with the incident response.
