Arapahoe authorities await suspect’s release from hospital

Residents of an upscale condominium complex say they’re stunned at the death of Mae Kuroki, the 81-year-old woman who authorities believe was killed by her son in her Centennial home.

Arapahoe County deputies were called to her residence in the 8600 block of Dry Creek Road around 11 a.m., April 2 on a routine welfare check, according to Undersheriff David Walcher.

When authorities arrived, they found Kuroki’s body.

“She was always out and about,” said Jeni Swanson, a neighbor who lives in the same building as Kuroki for seven years. “Although I didn’t know her particularly well, she was always around, and very active—always on the treadmill in the gym or out by the pool, laughing and talking.”

Kuroki’s 53-year-old son, David Wayne Kuroki is a suspect in her death according to a statement by the ACSO.

While some neighbors describe an unusual uneasiness between Kuroki and her son, a former lab assistant at Novus Biologicals, a Littleton-based biotechnology company, Swanson said she saw a different side.

“While didn’t know him (David) that well, I know he used to come over on Sundays and vacuum for her,” Swanson said. “She was very proud of her family and always spoke very highly of her son—that’s kinda why we don’t get it.”

The younger Kuroki was taken into custody hours after his mother’s body was found.

“He was transported to a local hospital and is being treated for self-inflicted injuries,” explained Walcher. “We’re anxious to get on with the case, but given the circumstances, we’re in a holding pattern.”

Kuroki has not been booked or charged yet, he added.

“No details with regard to the manner and cause of death have been released, or will be released until we’re absolutely certain such information will not compromise the investigation,” said Walcher.

“We were all just so surprised when we heard it was Mae,” said Swanson who described her neighbor as a tiny, dark-haired dynamo. “Yeah, she’ll be missed, for sure.”
